prevention is the Best Skunk deterrent

prevention is the Best Skunk deterrent

You are enjoying a nice evening out on the front porch when suddenly you smell it, the horribly unmistakable scent of a skunk. Your nice, relaxing evening is ruined as you have to hurry into the house. Or, imagine you are doing dishes after supper and you look out the window to see a fat, happy skunk walking unhurried over your property. You quickly run to the back door and call your dog in before the dog has an chance to get into a big mess. Taking some preventative steps can help to take care of this problem and these steps can be the best skunk deterrent.

There are several, very uncomplicated things you can do to make your yard unappealing to skunks. You need to take away all food and shelter sources. Here are some of the things you can do:

1. Get rid of all pet food and water. If your pet needs it during the day, pick it up in early afternoon.

2. Clear all piles of brush, wood, rocks and compost.

3. Acquire all points of entry, no matter how small, under your front and back porch.

4. Acquire all trash. Make sure it can be tore into or opened.

5. Get rid of tree stumps that have hiding places for skunks.

6. Keep all garages and sheds closed.

Under your porch is a popular hiding place for skunks. Make sure you have all skunks removed before securing it. You do not want to have to deal with the smell of a dead skunk. An exterminator will usually be able to take off skunks.

So, before you try moth balls and other skunk preventative that can be harmful to pets or small children, work to make your yard as unwelcoming as you perhaps can. The skunks may leave on their own to a more exquisite setting.
